In the mid-1960’s several free-thinking developers had an epiphany thinking a housing development south of the Phoenix city limits that was close to South Mountain Park might be a project worth looking into; especially if they used a colorful Indian name to attract buyers.
In the end, the epiphany worked like a charm and this beautiful housing development blossomed like poppies in a vacant field. Today Ahwatukee is surrounded by South Mountain Park, blocked to the east by Interstate 10, and to the south by the Gila River Indian Community.
And even though Ahwatukee is isolated from the hustle and bustle of a large city like Phoenix, it is now incorporated.

You’ll find four golf courses in the Ahwatukee Village: Club West, Foothills, Ahwatukee Lakes (yes they have a lake in the village), and the popular Ahwatukee Country Club. And if you’re looking for a few golfing tips, you might luck out and run into several well-known PGA golfing pros you can ask who live in the village.
K-8 students are served by the Kyrene School District. However high school students will be obligated to attend one of two in the area: Desert Vista or Mountain Pointe. Private/Charter schools are also available; the newest Montessori opened in June of 2010 and serves ages 2-6.
Once you discover the charm and friendly folks who live and enjoy the Ahwatukee Life, you’ll surely want to become part of those who live the “foothill lifestyle.” The Village of Ahwatukee offers new homeowners and homeowner wannabes every possible item on any list.
Yet it’s possible that often you may have to cross the Interstate into nearby Phoenix, Chandler, or Tempe to locate something you can’t find in the village; and that includes those who must leave Ahwatukee for work in the “big city.
However it’s always a pleasure to see people and business associates you recognize, shops and other favorite stops you frequent, in the foothills of Ahwatukee Village that make living in Ahwatukee worth a few inconveniences now and then.
The Ahwatukee Foothills is one of 15 Urban Villages that are now part of Phoenix. Overall it covers about 36 square miles with a population of nearly 82,000. Many believe the Ahwatukee Foothills is the perfect place for family living.
10 years ago Money Magazine named Ahwatukee one of the best places to live in the entire metro Phoenix area. Maybe you should consider the amenities and join the lucky few in Ahwatukee Foothills living.
